In 1798, Father Fermin de Lasuen founded Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, often called the King of the Missions because it was the largest of the California missions. Trivia fans: Before the administrator Father Antonio Peyri retired, he planted certain seeds given by a sailor who could explain only that they came from South America. They sprouted vigorously and grew quickly into tall saplings -- the first pepper trees in California!
